Monthly Meetings

The Jacksonville Orchid Society meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except in May and December) at the Garden Club of Jacksonville, 1005 Riverside Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32204. The doors open at 7 pm. Guests and visitors are always welcome! If you decide to join after coming to a few meetings, membership is $25.00 for a family and $20.00 for individuals.

The culture class for beginner and new growers needing assistance begins at 7 pm. This is a good time to ask questions from an expert grower and get tips for what to do when there is a problem. We cover a wide variety of topics including species and hybrids that are good to grow in this area, identification of pests and diseases, watering and fertilizing, and where to grow your orchids.

The general program with guest speakers begins at 7:30. We hold a general business meeting, serve refreshments, listen to an inspiring presentation by an orchid expert, participate in a raffle, and look at many beautiful and exotic flowers brought in by our members. Members are welcome to bring blooming plants for a friendly judging at the Show Table. Here are the Show Table Instructions and a link to the interactive Show Table Form. Plants are usually for sale at each meeting, often brought by the guest speaker.

The JOS will provide your choice of steaks, ribs or burgers. You should bring a covered dish to round out the meal. Salads, veggies, desserts are always enjoyed! Plates, drinks and plastic silverware will be provided, bring your own if you want real utensils. Also bring a folding chair and table along with folding money as there will be a plant auction for you to add to your plant collection.

If you have a nice blooming or awarded orchid, you can bring the plant to the picnic to be auctioned. The rules are simple:
  • The plant should be in spike or bloom or it should be an AOS awarded plant
  • The plant should be insect and disease free
  • The plant should have a name tag or some description of flower if possible
  • The plant should be clean and in show presentation form (this will also help bring great bid)
  • The seller will receive 2/3 of the proceeds and the club 1/3 of bid
  • Please bring list of plants you bring to give to BJ or Linda at the picnic on 5/22/11 to make sure you get credit and payment
